Adventures of an NYC Mama

Discovering the city with kids in tow.

2010: New Year, Even More Adventures Ahead
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

53683931-1I’m not a fan of New Year Resolutions. Though I love New Beginnings. For me, it’s a time of reflection, a time to take a long hard look at what/who is weighing me down, and what/who is lifting me up.  But most of all it is a time, though not the only time throughout the year, where I can really appreciate all of the people that have made this year one of growth, learning, and happiness for me.

My husband, with whom I celebrated another year of marriage and companionship, is by far on the top of my list of people to be grateful for. He’s the reason you even know me. He is my strongest supporter, my dearest friend, and really just an all around awesome guy. He and my kids have made this year a really, really fun one.

Oh man, my kids. Ok. Well. Love them. A lot. The 12 year old flourished this year. Somehow managed to be taller than me. The 3 and 4 year old. Pure terror. Yup. Others say that they are not. But they are. They have however, also gotten smarter, more articulate. This year they both learned to go potty and drink successfully out of normal cups and glasses and have learned to not run around like wild monkeys at restaurants. Happy and healthy, they make for awesome tax deductions and great stories, and quite a fun and interesting life.

My friends…wow. How blessed am I to have made such amazing new friendships this year. What’s even more amazing is that a lot of those friendships are with girls/women/chicks…and to boot, other Moms. Because honestly, I have not always been the mom/chick/women/girl’s friend type of person…but maybe, now, I kinda sorta am…or better yet, maybe there are way more cooler moms/chicks/women/girl’s out there than I ever noticed before…and they want to be friends with me…which makes me feel special. And the dads/guys/dudes…well, for some amazing reason, they’re all hot…and funny, and smart, and down to earth…which means that at any given moment, I could be surrounded by a bunch of really hot dads/guys/dudes…kinda like in  high school. What girl doesn’t like that deal?

My blog. Wow. Biggie. Still amazed that people read it…and super flattered that they keep coming back for more. Thanks. Really. It’s an awesome ride and I am glad you are joining me on it. To all who read it, connect with me through it, and want to work with me because of it: Thank you! You have really made this year surreal and incredible for us!

Last, but certainly not least, my home, my town, NYC. What can I say that I haven’t already?  I love you. You make me feel the most grounded I’ve ever been in my life. I love everything about you…even when I don’t. People are always asking me why and how a family as large as mine doesn’t just move to the burbs, where life promises to be easier and better and less expensive…and yeah, it’s tempting at times. But you are who I am…and where I belong.

So here it is, another new year.  I hope that you find content in who you have been and the life you lead enough to not want to change too much next year, but I also wish you happiness, health, and much success in the many things you’ve yet to accomplish. May any unaccomplished dreams, or developed new ones find their way into your reality this year and may your days be full of Adventures!

Happy New Year Everyone!

In The Next Room or the vibrator play, Lyceum Theater
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

I entered the Lyceum Theater on a rainy afternoon after Christmas with my girlfriend to catch a showing of In The Next Room or the vibrator play, a play by Sarah Ruhl, to see what all the buzz was about.

The theater was full of  a much, much older crowd. I had the pleasure of sitting next to a 60-something year old woman, from Long Island, with the heavy accent to boot, and her group of 5 or 6 older female friends.

The Lyceum Theater, a  beautiful venue, was packed it seemed with many out-of-towners, and not very many youngsters. And that is because, as the title might suggest, In The Next Room or the vibrator play is not a play for kids.

The story takes place in the 1880s, in the home of Dr. Givings (Michael Cerveris) who tends to his female patients suffering from hysterias with a new device, use of which is made possible by the new invention of electricity.

While the Dr.’s wife, Mrs. Givings (Laura Benanti), is bored and lonely, tending to their newborn daughter, she slowly becomes curious about the strange sounds coming from the next room where her husband treats his patients. This leads to a chain of events that are both comical and sad as these sexually repressed women come to terms with the new sensations they experience from this strange device. There are several other stories mixed in involving Elizabeth (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), the wet nurse hired by the Dr. and his wife, the doctor’s female patient, Mrs. Daldry (Maria Dizzia), Annie, the nurse (Wendy Rich Stetson), and others (Thomas Jay Ryan and Chandler Wiliams).

But at the core of it all is the relationship between the two main characters, the Dr. and his wife, and their intimacy and connection with one another.

On a side note, during intermission, I thought it hysterical and interesting to listen to the conversations had between the older women sitting next to me about vibrators and sex, as they equated the views and situations of the women as seen in the play to the sexual taboos that were in place still even when they themselves were young married women.

Chandler Williams, Laura Benanti

And this is what struck me the most about the play. How sad it must’ve been for the women of these times who were so misunderstood, so repressed, so sheltered, and how much sadder still was the lack of compassion and sympathy they received not only from society, but from their very husbands. I also thought how amazing it was that the innovations, such as these vibrators, which were initially and most definitely not used to stimulate sexual pleasure, managed to evolve into devices that have led to the sexual freedom, expression, and independence for so many, especially women.

I thought it was a wonderful show. The cast was amazing, the acting strong.  I fell in love with Mr. Cerveris’ character, but also with Ms. Tyler Bernstine’s. I thought Ms. Benanti was amazing has she held center stage beautifully during most of the show, and Ms. Rich Stetson, though initially seen as a side character, became such a strong part of the overall message in the show, that she managed to both break my heart and make me tear up.

And though it is not a show for the young, the prude, or the close-minded, it is a wonderful theatrical experience that takes you into what it must’ve been like to be, not only for a woman, but a sexual, loving soul during these incredible times of innovation and discoveries.

In The Next Room or the vibrator play runs through January 10

Ice Skating in The Pond, Bryant Park, NY
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

Bryant Park is one of my favorite smaller parks in NYC.  I have written about it here before.  It is the main location of every year’s Fashion Week , and of many more events year round. But in the Winter especially, the park is transformed into a Winter Wonderland, and The Pond is created hosting a free skating rink, along with shops for the holidays, a gorgeous Christmas tree, and bar/restaurant, Celsius, with heating lamps that make it possible to enjoy a hot cup of cocoa, or whatever other beverage you prefer in the seating area outside overlooking the skaters.

IMG_4571

My family and I have spent many evenings here and though the crowds closer to the Holiday season make it harder to skate with the little ones who are still just learning, the people watching is still fabulous, and the scenery such an example of what makes NYC wonderful. After the recent snow fall my kids had more fun playing in the snow and so that’s what they did instead as my husband and I watched the skaters and enjoyed the evening out.

The Pond has holiday hours in place till the 31 of December, with regular hours resuming on January 1, so check their website for details.

If you are still celebrating the holidays, or just want to celebrate the beautiful winter season in the marvelous city, head over to Bryant Park.  It’s centrally located, between the West and East side of Manhattan as well.

During our most recent visit we had come from taking in the window displays at Bloomingdale’s and eating ice cream at Dylan’s Candy Bar. Then after visiting The Pond, we headed West and walk through Times Square, past Toy’s R Us and other favorite spots along the way.

And it’s a perfect setting whether it’s family night, or date night. I encourage you to visit before it is gone again for the season. Though I love it most at night, when the lights of the city are looking down upon us, it truly is a fun place to visit no matter what time of day.

Holiday in New York City: Grand Central Station
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

Well, here it is. The holidays in New York City. My kids have not been sleeping well…or rather, I have not been sleeping well. The little ones have been waking up way too early for my liking and I am not sure why.  It may have something to do with the excitement in the air overall.

This is our second Christmas in New York City since we moved back from Wisconsin. When I lived in WI, and any time I lived anywhere other than New York and spent the Holidays there, I was miserable. I missed the lights, and music. The sounds of the songs coming from stores, the bells ringing from the Salvation Army volunteers on every corner. It always made my heart sink.

And since I have returned, I have made sure to take it all in, not miss a thing…and in the process expose my kids to all the magic that is New York City during the Holidays.

So, in the next couple of days or so, I will share with you some of the things we are doing during the holiday season, and if you aren’t here, or can’t partake in some of the fun going on, I hope, as is always my wish at any season, that you will decide to celebrate it here next year.

Today we headed to Grand Central Station. You know, the same place I wrote about when I told you about the awesome marketplace they have there (back in the day when I used to hide behind my words and write in third person). Well, Grand Central Station has a few things going on during the holidays.  I made a brief mention of it on NY Metropolista, but our real life adventure was way more fun.

IMG_4498

We started off by visiting the Holiday Fair. It wasn’t too crowded. Very colorful and a lot of hand made products and products made with natural materials, which made each gift very crafty and unique. One of my favorite booths was the Ka Kee Organics booth. Such cute little outfits and toys. I immediately thought about my little nephew out in Austin, TX and all the cute little things I could get him from there. Check them out, sweet, sweet selection of clothing, toys for both baby and pet. My kids discovered a  plush toy called Art Plush, which are toys inspired by the art of many famous artists such as Keith Haring, John Pollock, Jean Dubuffett, and more.

IMG_4470

IMG_4473

IMG_4475

IMG_4476

The rest of the fair had hand made jewelry, soaps, wool hats, ceramics, and glassware. The fair is only on till tomorrow, Dec. 24, but if you have a chance to stop by, even if just to look and pick up some business cards for online shopping later on, it’s a nice experience.

After browsing through the Holiday Fair, we walked over to the Main Concourse and waited to see the Holiday Light Show. It starts everyday at 11:00am and continues every half hour to 9:00PM till Dec. 31. Once the music and display started, the boys sat on the floor and watched in awe. It’s pretty cool, and the kids really enjoyed it. I looked around as people rushed passed all the displays and thought to myself what a shame it was the so many missed it in their hurried frenzy.

IMG_4483

IMG_4490

IMG_4497

IMG_4499After watching the Light Show, we walked over to the NY Transit Museum to catch the 8th Annual Train Show, a display of Lionel trains honoring all the various MTA trains recent and past. For my boys this was the cherry on the cake. They were totally into it…and to tell the truth, so were the very many other little boys and dads in the store. The display is on till Jan. 18.

We soon started feeling hungry. A lot of people don’t know this, but Grand Central’s Food Court is the best food court in the city. This is because the vendors are from some of the best eateries in town. From Junior’s Cheesecake to Manhattan Chili Company to Cafe Spice, this is such great food that we often just go there, because it’s all the great stuff in one location. But our absolute favorite place with the kids is Two Boots. There are several locations throughout the city, and I have to say it is one of the most kid-friendly pizza joints I know, and man is the pizza delicious!

I usually order a cheese pizza for the kids, and hubby ordered a Po’ Boy, but I ordered my favorite pizza there, the Bayou Beast. Spicy hot, with shrimp and andouille…it is yummy. We had a great time and it was a perfect ending to our time at Grand Central, which made for a good 2 hours of Holiday fun we all enjoyed.

A Boy Ready for Santa
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

My 4 year old is a hand full. He’s been getting his share of time outs and reprimands as of late. But this little boy, with his large green eyes, and dimpled smile, who is just as sweet as he is stubborn, is fully confident that Santa will be coming to his house this Christmas eve.

So much so, that he even sang about his coming to town with no worries in the world.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

The first snowfall of the season…I mean real snow fall, like storm, with gusty winds, and inches and inches of it. And I couldn’t be happier. I LOVE New York City covered in snow, it’s gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous.

So, there I was getting stuff done, kids in bed, husband finishing up his online gift buying, the wind slamming against our window. And I could see the snow falling and falling. The fire escape slowly starting to get white and the night sky clear from it. I looked at my husband and asked him to come outside with me.

It took some negotiating, but I got him to go. I am, at heart, still a child in many ways, and to me being grown up just means more freedom to indulge in these childish whims of mine…oh the joy!

The wind slapped us the second we stepped out of our building. Cars were rolling down the street very, very slowly. Everything covered in snow. I started giggling like a child. My darling husband patiently by my side as I took pictures. I thought of throwing a snowball or two at him, but I chose to be nice. This time.

IMG_4406

IMG_4410

IMG_4429

It made me think of all the awesome places to take the kids sledding tomorrow…like on Riverside Park (and 91 st) and Central Park (my friend Mommy Poppins recently created a nice little list for everyone on the best places to go) but these two are my favorites.  I like Central Park the most though because after sledding you can also opt to go ice skating, or go for nice long walks in one of their many winding paths. And here in our very own neighborhood of Washington Heights, we can go to Fort Tryon and have an awesome time in the snow too if we didn’t want to travel too far, and then grab a warm treat from one of the local bakeries or diners. All I know, is when my little ones wake up tomorrow morning, they are going to be so incredibly excited!

On this night though it was just hubby and me. We walked a few blocks, saw people coming back from shopping excursions, city workers clearing paths for buses and commuters (bless their souls), and others hanging out at local coffee shops, the windows misty from the warmth being delivered inside.

IMG_4438

IMG_4423

IMG_4437

I loved walking out there, touching the snow, running in it, my hair stiffning from it, my cheeks red. My husband, well, he warmed up to it as we walked some more, even kissed me a few times a long the way (yeah, he’s pretty awesome that one). It’s hard not to get into the moment. All those tall buildings and store awnings covered in snow, the holiday lights glistening off the falling snowflakes…ah, beautiful.

IMG_4419

IMG_4443

IMG_4417

IMG_4447

After a bit, we came back inside, shook off the snow, got back in our warm pjs, and back to what we were doing before. And though the weather outside is frightful, the warmth in our little apartment is so, so delightful, and since we have no adventures to go to tonight, I say, “Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!”

Have fun everyone!

Straight No Chaser in Concert
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

Last night I met up with some friends for dinner and a concert.  Invited by my darling friend, Isabel from Alphamom, my husband and I made our way to Haru, a wonderful sushi restaurant with various locations in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Over drinks and fabulous sushi, we talked about the group we were just about to see. I had never heard them, or seen them in concert. However, my husband had told me how he was told that they were an amazing, talented a capella group.

After dinner we headed out to the Nokia Theater in Times Square, and were sat waiting. The stage was very simply set. 10 stools, with a towel and a bottle of water each.

Then the young men of Straight No Chaser came on and from the second they greeted the audience we were entertained. The harmony among them is flawless, the songs were old favorites with an unique twist, as well as some originals sprinkled in between. But the chemistry between them is also wonderful. So much so that it was like watching a group of brothers hanging out, having fun. Right away you like them, you can’t help but like them. They are attractive, talented, funny, relatable.

ZAEH_SNC_SHOT7-6

And to know the story behind Straight No Chaser is to understand this chemistry, this brotherhood which so wonderfully compliments the voices and melodies we enjoy from seeing them on stage.

Their story is as follows:

In the fall of 1996, Indiana University student Dan Ponce hand-picked ten friends to create the campus’s first a cappella group. Ponce chose the members not only for their outstanding voices, but for their personalities. Purposefully avoiding the stereotype of the traditional college a cappella group, they treated themselves more like a local band that just happened to use their voices as their instruments.

The formula worked: it wasn’t long before they were headlining concerts, and within two years, they were touring nationally. In 1999, with college graduation looming, the members of Straight No Chaser chose their replacements – putting a plan in place to ensure that the new tradition they had created would continue on with successive generations of IU undergrads. Then, in April 2006, Indiana University decided to host a reunion concert for the original members. In honor of the event, original group member Randy Stine posted clips from one of their 1998 concerts on YouTube to share with the other founding members. Suddenly, concert footage that was nearly a decade old was available to be seen by millions of people worldwide… and see it they did, in mind-blowing numbers. With no promotion, Straight No Chaser’s version of “The 12 Days Of Christmas” (interpolating Toto’s “Africa”) received more than seven million views in December of 2007 alone, becoming the hottest viral video of the season.

The 12 Days of Christmas Original from 1998

In a turn of events that the spiritually inclined might describe as a “higher power” moment, Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman happened to be among those millions of viewers. “It was completely random and totally unexpected,” says Kallman. “I was surfing YouTube to check out what was new, when I saw this brilliant, fresh, and totally compelling performance. And then I saw how many hits they were getting, and I had something of an epiphany. So I emailed Randy right away.” Randy, not surprisingly, thought it was some kind of prank. “The head of Atlantic Records emailing me at 8 a.m. New Year’s Day and saying he was interested in our group? I thought, ‘yeah, right.’” Fortunately, Randy decided to check it out anyway, and he and Dan soon found themselves having dinner with Craig in L.A. Within a few days, the entire group flew to Atlantic’s offices in New York, and a deal was in the works.

In the years since they graduated from college, the original members of Straight No Chaser had embarked on a variety of life paths – some pursuing professional careers in music and theatre, some going into other fields entirely. But suddenly presented with the unforeseen opportunity to come back together, make their major label debut, and take their music to a new level, they all agreed to seize the head-spinning moment.

The birth of Straight No Chaser’s second life is a story of talent, drive, and some very good luck indeed. It’s cause for celebration… but please don’t strike up the band.-Atlantic Records

Fueled by Straight No Chaser’s appearances on the Today show, ABC World News Tonight, and CNN Headline News, among others, Holiday Spirits, their first Christmas album, spent 14 days in the #1 slot on Amazon, and 5 days in the top spot overall on iTunes. The group’s now famous version of The 12 Days Of Christmas peaked in the top 10 on the Christmas radio chart and reached the top 15 at Hot AC. On their first-ever headline tour in December 2008, Straight No Chaser sold out shows across the country.

“Back in college, we started this group just for fun – no one ever thought of it as a possible career path,” says Randy Stine. “It was hard to comprehend that ten years after our last performance, we were back together recording for a major label, with an album that reached number one on iTunes, heading out on an international tour.   Along with all the fun is a lot of work, but it’s a complete labor of love, and one that we never dreamed possible.”

In the year since the release of Holiday Spirits, the lives of Straight No Chaser’s members have been transformed. In the wake of the album’s success, the members of the group who had been holding down full-time jobs were able to leave their day gigs to pursue SNC full-time. “Whereas before we were essentially juggling two careers, now we get to put all of our heart and energy into Straight No Chaser,” says Dan Ponce.

For the 2009 holiday season, they have released a new album titled Christmas Cheers, some of which I got to enjoy last night.

Christmas Cheers Album Cover

What I enjoyed the most from SNC is that they go beyond what we would think an a cappella group would do.  With their renditions of modern favorites like Rehab (Amy Winehouse) to classics like Lean on Me, SNC was able to carry their own beautifully.  I absolutely loved their Sitcom Medley (OMG, had me laughing to no end) and, yes, even hubby loved the show. We were both elated when we walked out, because the show was really that good.

Straight No Chaser continues to be on the road for a full 50-city cross-country tour, by far their biggest trek to date. In addition, the group has already been hard at work on a new pop album for 2010. Their goal remains the same as it was back in their college days. As Randy says, “We want the audience to not miss the instruments, be surprised by what we’re doing, and in the end, appreciate the songs in a whole new way.”

Many of their Winter tour dates have sold out (check to make sure you still have a chance for seats), but they have already listed their Spring tour dates. Check their website for more info and to purchase tickets.

Check them out in concert, or on iTunes or at a music retailer near you for their latest album. It truly is an awesome gift, either for yourself or someone you really, really like…A LOT.

Straight No Chaser are:

Ryan Ahlwardt, Walter Chase, Jerome Collins,Seggie Isho, Michael Luginbill, Charlie Mechling, Dan Ponce, David Roberts, Randy Stine, and Tyler Trepp

Thank you to Atlantic Records and Isabel for an awesome, fun-filled night!

Hansel & Gretel at The Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

Ah, the opera. To many ‘a night at the opera’ has such a romantic, sophisticated sound to it. The images of tragic tales, or romantic dramas being sung on stage by the extraordinary capacity of opera singers, carried by the majestical accompaniment of a grand orchestra and their conductor; these are the things that really make the statement “I’m going to the opera” seem incredibly lucky. At least that is how I felt when the wonderful people at The Metropolitan Opera House offered me two complimentary tickets to see the performance of Hansel and Gretel going on now through January 2, 2010.

IMG_4657

photo

The Metropolitan Opera’s rendition of Hansel and Gretel has a lot of elements that differ from the original fairy tale. It is comedic and a bit frightening, but also intriguing and quite beautiful in so many ways, from the performance to the stage set up, to the various scenes…my absolute favorite being a dream sequence which was really breathtaking.

Soprano Miah Persson who plays Gretel and Mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager who plans Hansel, both give an awesome performance. The Witch, played by English tenor Philip Langridge is powerful, funny, and scary. He did an amazing job at really bringing all of that to his scenes. I have heard of Mr. Langridge’s performance before, it had received much praise, but really being able to see it was a treat for me.

And to find the words that give justice to how beautifully the Metropolitan Orchestra played is actually a bit challenging. I don’t know how, except to say that I closed my eyes between scenes and enjoyed it to the fullest while Conductor Fabio Luisi slowly set the tone for the visually stunning settings before us.

photo2

The Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center was designed by Wallace K. Harrison and opened there in 1966 (the original was located on Broadway and 39th St and opened 1833). It is one of the most beautiful, architectural masterpieces any one can enter. You are taken back in time as you walk down the rounding staircases, or sip champaign standing next to the velvet covered walls of the foyer. Or as you sit in the performance hall underneath the crystal chandelier and gold leaf ceiling.  The Chagall paintings, also seen from outside, command attention and add to the overall artistic magic of the place. I swear it’s like going back in time. Very rarely, if ever, do they make masterpieces like these anymore.

The Grand Tier Restaurant is located on the upper level of the Opera House. It is open to opera ticket holders only. Dining and bar are open two hours prior to show and during intermission. Reservations and intermission pre-orders highly recommended. They currently have a Hansel and Gretel pre-fix menu, including a children’s menu. My husband and I didn’t enjoy this part of the experience, but promised ourselves we would next time. It is so lovely.

I also think taking children to the opera is a wonderful experience for them, though I wouldn’t recommend taking younger children. Hansel and Gretel runs 2 hours and 15 minutes, and other operas can be even longer than that. It might be difficult for some children to stay still that long. If you are late, or exit the performance hall during the performance you are not allow to enter the hall until intermission. There are live feeds shown on t.v. screens in the hall, but not the same thing, obviously. Also, though Hansel and Gretel is an English performance, you should feel comfortable in attending a foreign language one as well. Digital translators are placed in front of all seats. Aida, coming in March is in Italian and it is by far one of my favorite operas. I highly reccommend it as well.

IMG_4646

We really enjoyed our evening at the opera. Hansel and Gretel was a fun performance, definitely family-friendly, and a wonderful holiday activity. Go with the family, or on a date night as we did, either way, I promise you will love this adventure. Visit The Metropolitan Opera’s official website for ticket information and listings of other events and performances.

Thank you to The Metropolitan Opera for making this NYC Adventure possible.

Anthos Restaurant, Delight in Greek Cuisine Experience
Enjoying my city.
[info]nycitymama

While out taking in the sights around Rockefeller Center with my brother and his girlfriend, who were both visiting, we decided to have dinner in the area.  We wanted Greek and started looking up places in the area that might be good.

We decided on Anthos Restaurant located at 36 West 52nd St, between 5 and 6. The restaurant, owned by Donatella Arpaia and Michael Psilakis, offers an amazing Greek Cuisine selection and a wonderful atmosphere.

The location’s design is soft, warm, sophisticated, and inviting. The staff incredibly hospitable and friendly. When we arrived, around 6:00 PM, the restaurant was almost empty. We were seated right away and tended to immediately.

IMG_4642

IMG_4640

For starters, we ordered to share the Greek Salad and Ricotta Dumplings. The Greek Salad was interesting in that it had elements I had never seen in a Greek salad before, such as beets, broccoli, and other ingredients, but it was still very good.  The Ricotta Dumplings are amazing. A creamy, flavorful treat balanced with spinach and leek, at first bite I closed my eyes and just savored each dumpling as it melted in my mouth. It was a wonderful way to start our meal.  We were also offered fresh breads, with cow’s and goat’s milk butter, olives, fried pita bread, and other little treats, all of which served to really excite us about our main courses.

IMG_4625

IMG_4624

I ordered a pasta dish that came with strips of thinly cut lamb belly, almost resembling bacon, and escarole. Heavenly.  My brother ordered a chicken dish, his girlfriend the roasted monk fish, and my husband the striped bass. Everyone really enjoyed their meal. The recurring comment was how flavorful every thing was. The use of figs, dill, sauces, cheeses…it was such an amazing culinary experience that we were still talking about it at the end of our evening.

At the end of our meal our server offered us a dish of sweets, “on behalf of the serving staff”, which we thought was so sweet, both in gesture and taste. It was a combination of cookies with chocolate and other sweets, but the most interesting one of all was the key lime cotton candy dish. I have never in my life tasted cotton candy this incredible.

It is a bit pricier than most restaurants we frequent on a regular basis, but then again, this isn’t your average Greek food. It truly should be added to your list of romantic dinner adventures or special gatherings with friends. They have a small but inviting bar. My brother ordered a specialty drink that they did not have on the drink menu, but which they happily made at my brother’s request.

As it got later the restaurant began to get crowded. Keep in mind we also went on a Monday night, so I would highly recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit on a weekend. The servings are enough, leaving all of us satisfied, and the presentation was artistic to say the least. Overall, an amazing culinary experience of Greek Cuisine.

Check out Anthos Restaurant website for more information. Their online menu differs a tad in content from the one we had at the restaurant, which had more selections. I will happily visit again soon.
